Guérande is a medieval city renowned for its rich historical heritage and iconic salt marshes.

Here are a few points of interest not to be missed:

  • Les Remparts de Guérande: the town is surrounded by 14th-century ramparts, with four main gates, including the Porte Saint-Michel, providing access to the historic center. A walk along the ramparts offers a panoramic view of the town and its surroundings, as well as the Musée du Pays de Guérande.
  • Medieval festivals: every year in June, Guérande organizes a medieval festival with entertainment, shows, equestrian jousting and costumed parades.

Welcome to salt country! The Guérande peninsula is famous for its salt marshes, which have ensured the prosperity of the area for many centuries.

Today, the 2,000 hectares of marshland form a unique mosaic landscape, home to hundreds of bird species and precious flora. Guérande’s salt and delicate fleur de sel are treasures to bring back in your suitcases.

The most beautiful markets in Guérande

The medieval town of Guérande is famous for its large weekly markets. They attract many visitors all year round, and even more in summer! Every Wednesday and Saturday, colorful stalls take their place behind the ramparts, around Saint-Aubin Cathedral and the covered market.

A not-to-be-missed event for tourism in Loire-Atlantique, they provide an opportunity to meet local producers in a warm, festive atmosphere. The terraces are full. It’s almost time to sit down to a galette!
